At my grandfather’s funeral, I learned a lot of things about him that I had never known. It really made me wish that I had talked to him about some of those things, before he had passed away. He had moved to Chicago from New York, where his father was a prominent Brooklyn bankruptcy attorney when he was 18 years old. He started his own used car sales business, and quickly became the Midwest’s largest retailer of used cars. I had never even known that he was in that business. I knew that my mom once told me that when she first started dating my dad, that her mom always used to laugh because my dad would pick her up in a different car every time. I guess I never made the connection to my grandfather being in the used car sales business. The only business I had ever really known him being in was the firearm distribution business. He had started as an auctioneer, and one time they auctioned off a large gun collection. It made so much that my grandfather decided to go into the firearm business. He became a pioneer in that business, popularizing the collecting of antique weapons and remaking famous models.
